Hammond picked up a hat-trick and two assists to take his recent hot streak to 18 points in his last eight games with a man of the match display.

The visitors opened the scoring with 45 seconds to go of the first period when Jacob Johnston’s pass into the middle came off Kyle Wharton’s skate to beat Michal Zajkowski.

The lead didn’t last long when Matt Beca played the puck to Mike Hammond at the back post, who teed up Pitt with a stinging shot to restore parity before the break.

Clan took the lead five minutes into the middle period as Corey Cowick buried a chance at the near post in front of the crease.

Craig Peacock added a third on the powerplay from an acute angle after he was fed by an excellent pass from Matt Keith.

Hammond then added Braehead’s fourth with a finish in front of Fullerton for his 15th point in eight games, with Pitt the provider.

Edinburgh hit back as Garrett Milan, who got enough of a touch from Jacob Johnston’s pass to leave Zajkowski beaten.

The Caps pulled themselves to within one as Ian Schultz got a final touch to turn the game into a more nervy affair.

Scott Pitt then nabbed his second of the game, stabbing home before he helped set up Hammond to make it 6-3, following another move involving Beca.

Schultz’s night finished early, as he was sent to the locker room for abuse of official, however the Caps weren’t out of yet with Milan’s shot flying past Zajkowski for their fourth.

Hammond completed his hat-trick and a five-point game before Jared Staal added Edinburgh’s fifth with a late consolation.
