Head Coach, Scott McKenzie, Announces This Years Captain And Assistants.

Scott McKenzie is delighted to announce that Shaun Dippnall will be Widnes Wild’s captain for the 2015/16 season with Ken Armstrong and Calum Ruddick as the assistants.

Shaun is a smart forward, not the quickest but what he lacks in speed he makes up for with smarts. He controls the puck well and makes good decisions. Shaun has played 58 games for the Wild amassing 27 goals & 64 assists, a real playmaking asset for the Wild.

Shaun had this to say about the news:

‘I was both shocked and honoured when Scott asked me to be captain. It’s going to be a good season for us this year and our main aim is to win the league.’

‘The team is coming together nicely and I’ve never been in a Widnes Wild changing room that has as good of an atmosphere than this. We are all starting to gel and get used to the way Scott wants us to play and we can’t wait to get started. It’s certainly going to be a good one.’

Calum is a solid defenseman who makes a good first pass. He is very passionate about the Wild and plays with a real aggression. He has played 51 games scoring 4 goals & 16 assists while collecting 193 penalty minutes.

Calum had this to say:

‘I think we have a strong leadership core, between us we offer different qualities and leadership. I’m proud and pleased to be given the A on my jersey, I’m confident in what I bring to help the team on and off the ice.’

‘Personally I think the team are capable of achieving our targets and playing hockey that our fans will enjoy watching. It’s a really good time to be involved with the Wild.’

Ken has been with the Wild for the past two seasons and has become a fans favourite. He works hard, plays with his heart on his sleeve and is willing to do anything for his team-mates. Ken has played 56 games for Wild scoring 4 goals & 5 assists.

Ken added:

‘When Scott approached me about being assistant captain I was quite surprised. I’d not even thought about it and it’s quite an honour. With Shaun as captain and Calum as the other assistant, Scott has a good group of leaders for the team.’

‘We’ve got a good solid team with a mixture of youth and experience this year, also a new coach who has brought a different style of play to the team. All the boys can’t wait to wear the Wild jersey when the season starts.’

Ken has played 2 seasons with the Wild playing 56 games, scoring 4 goals and assisting with 5.

Head Coach Scott McKenzie added:

‘Choosing Captains was not something I wanted to rush. I have spent the last few weeks looking at my options and I think Shaun, Ken & Calum are a perfect fit to lead our team this current season. Ken & Calum are both very committed to the Wild. Ken has barely missed a session or event since I have came on board and Calum has shown that he will have a more positive attitude this year. Shaun is a quiet guy. Although this is the case, he chooses his moments to speak and when he does, it is with a purpose and meaning. He stood out for me over the last few weeks and I think I will be able to guide and help him in how to be a successful captain.
