HAWKS target a perfect 10

From Lancashire Telegraph

Blackburn HAWKS player-coach Jared Owen insists his on-fire side can be make it a perfect 10 in tomorrow’s top-of-the-table NIHL N1 Moralee Conference clash at Solway Sharks (7pm).

The Hawks head to Scotland on the back of an incredible winning run which stretched to nine matches last weekend when they beat Sutton Sting 3-1.

The impressive victory hauled the resurgent Blackburn Ice Arena outfit above the Sting into third and within five points of leaders and defending champions Solway.

The Sharks have won two of the three meetings between the teams this season and are defending an unbeaten record at their Dumfries-based rink.

But Owen is quietly confident the Hawks can become the first side to win there in 14 games.

He said: “We are really looking forward to the game and we will go into it really positive and full of confidence.

“We know they are a good team – you only have to look at the table and their results to see that.

“But we are a good team as well and if we play our game I am confident we can win.”

The Hawks hope to have the psychological edge going into the contest after they came from three goals down to win 6-3 at home to Solway in last month’s Northern Cup clash in Blackburn.

Since then they have swept aside Whitley Warriors, Billingham Stars, Telford Titans and – last weekend – Sutton in the league.

Owen said: “The win over Sutton was massive for us.

“We did everything we set out to do in training on the Thursday.

“We stuck to our game plan not get drawn into the way they play and in the end I thought we should have won by more.

“Their goalie had a really good game while ours did not have much to do.”

The trip to the Sharks is the first game in a weekend double-header for the Hawks as on Sunday they entertain local rivals Manchester Minotaurs (5.45pm).

Owen, who will have a full-strength side for both matches, added: “It’s a big game already but it will become an even bigger game if we beat Solway.

“It’s a local derby and the opposition will be up for it so we have to make sure we don’t slip up.”
