HAWKS retain solid core for 2013

Blackburn HAWKS are pleased to announce the return of four key players from last year’s playoff winning team.

Returning for the 2013/14 season are David Meikle, Aaron Davies, Ollie Lomax and Sam Dunford. All four players were a big part of last season’s team and the Hawks are delighted to have them back for the new season.

Head Coach Jared Owen said: “I’m really happy to have these four guys back as the building blocks of our team for the upcoming season. They all bring something different to the team and we are looking for some continuity this season as we had an excellent team spirit and work ethic last year – these guys were a big part of that.

David Meikle has put pen to paper to confirm his 10th year with the club and Owen was quick to praise his contribution to the team.

“Meikle is a big offensive threat for the team, although his goal total dipped a little bit last season we really saw in the playoff finals the abilities he has and the knack for getting a big goal. I’m confident he will have a big season this next year and I’m glad it will be as a Hawk.

“Ollie is a Hawk through and through, he doesn’t want to play for anyone else and he is desperate to see the team have success. He made a massive sacrifice last year choosing not to ice in the second leg of the final and that demonstrated to me what the team means to him. He is one of our senior defencemen now and I’m looking for him to grow and flourish in that leadership role next season.”

On the return of Davies and Dunford Owen said

“Aaron came back to the team after a short spell at Deeside. Last summer he opted for a change as he’d been with the Hawks a long time. It didn’t work out for him and when he came to speak to me the timing was right for all parties. When he returned the team got stronger and he played a key role in helping the team reach the playoffs and also in winning the final. He scored some big goals last year and you always know what you’re getting with him, he works hard, gets stuck in and drives to the net looking for goals.

“Sam is an excellent two way player who is very responsible in his own end and with his speed is able to create chances for him and his team mates. He is a great guy in the dressing room and is well liked by all his team mates. He showed in both legs of the final the scoring threat he possesses – he has the ability to score lots of goals but I’ll be looking for more consistency throughout the season this year. I want him to be more confident and produce the clinical level of finishing he showed in the final all season next year and we’ll be looking at a 10-15 goal player.

“Overall I am delighted with the start we have made to the team this season, we have been speaking to a number of players and lots of players are interested in coming to the Hawks which is a very positive sign, we are going to be in a very competitive conference this season and I’m looking forward to building a team to challenge at the top.”
