Hawks Fall to the Barons

The Full 9 Yards sponsored Blackburn Hawks fell to a disappointing defeat at the hands of Solihull Barons last night.

The home side again started well and hit the net after 41 seconds when Adam Barnes finished off a great move involving Lee Pollitt and Bobby Streetley. Barons were shell shocked and netminder Daniel Brittle had to be on top form to stop a rampant Hawks, The lead was doubled after 14.15. With Adam Barnes sitting out a delay of game penalty, Peta Valusiak broke free all alone from the centre circle  to score. With the clock running down two lapses in concentration cost the Hawks dear. Firstly Adam Brittle scored on 18.26 and then less than a minute later, brother Luke Brittle found a way past a screened Harrison Walker and the teams headed to the locker room for their first cup of tea.

Hawks deservedly restored their lead on 25.09 with  great goal from young Adam Barnes, assisted by Peta Valusiak and Lee Pollitt.    The game then totally changed in favour of the Barons when Danny Nomanovas was adjudged to have speared a Barons’ player after having been cross-checked in front of goal. This resulted in a match penalty and the team was short handed for 5 minutes.

Barons took full advantage scoring 3 goals on their powerplay. Luke Brittle made it 2-3 on 28.24, followed by a Josh Bruce mark 41 seconds later and a crushing third powerplay goal on 32.10 as Edward Eaton scored. Barons heaped more misery on the Hawks on 36.50 with  shortanded goal by Luke Brittle, his third of the game to give the visitors a 6-3 lead at the end of the second period.

Solihull all but sealed the win with a 7th goal in controversial circumstances. Hawks broke out of defence on 41.02 and Adam Barns slid the puck into the Barons net for what he thought was his hat-trick goal. Confusion arose when the referee Andy Millar washed the goal out and after advice from his linesman gave a goal to the Barons. Apparantly prior to the Hawks goal, and unseen by the referee, Luke Brittle had forced the puck into the Hawks net. This was brought to the referee’s attention by a linesman and as per the rules, the Hawks goal was washed out and instead of pulling a goal back, the home team found themselves 7-3 down. All credit to the Hawks for not letting their heads go down and they pulled a couple of powerplay goals back on 43.04 and 44.55 with the first one scored by Peta Valusiak, assistedn by Adam Barnes and James Neil and the second by Lee Pollit assisted by James Riddoch. Hawks took the game to the Barons but resolute defence and great netminding by Danny Brittle kept the puck out of the net and Niklas Ottosson ended the scoring on 48.39 to give the Barons a rather flattering 8-5 win.

A disappointed coach Steve Duncombe commented after the game, ” It is very difficult being on a 5 minute penalty kill and Barons punished us heavily with 3 goals. We had some defensive lapses tonight which we will address in training this week. On the positive side, we looked good going forward and scored goals at the right time. We will lose Danny Nomanovas for a few games after tonight but we will change things accordingly and be ready to go again next weekend.”
