Goalie union for Skins

Sanderson back in the game

Streatham Redskins are delighted to announce our netminding line-up for the 2013/14 season.

Will Sanderson and Stefan Nubert will be the men responsible for guarding the Redskins net this season, as both stoppers return to the Streatham squad for another season.

Sanderson learnt his trade in Slough as a youngster, making his way up through the ranks to the ENL side the Harrier-Hawks along with a brief stint as back up for the EPL Slough Jets. The twenty five year old made the switch to South London in 2009 and quickly became a big hit with the Streatham fans, thanks to his all-action displays in a struggling side.

Now entering his fifth season with the club, Sanderson has cemented his place between the pipes for Streatham.

“There was no doubt in my mind that after finishing last season the way we did as a team, I would want to return” said Sanderson on his return.

“Streatham has always been and will remain to be such a major part of my life. This was the club where I started my hockey career and made me the player I am today. The soul brought to the club from both players and fans is something that will always set it apart from any other team in this league”

“For that reason, Streatham will always be special and it will be a pleasure to wear the jersey for another season. Last season was a great one for us as a team both on and off the ice, and this season could be even better”

“The prospect of playing in the new arena offers numerous possibilities and holds a bright future for us as a club, if anything that alone makes for an exciting season ahead”

Sanderson’s competition for the starting spot comes from Stefan Nubert.

The 28 year old Welshman learnt his hockey in Cardiff before moving across to London, where he made his first senior appearance with the Haringey Greyhounds in 2004 before a two year spell with the Lee Valley Lions.

A move south of the river beckoned in 2007 and Streatham has been Nubert’s home ever since, making him one of the team’s longest serving players.

“I’m excited to be back at Streatham for my seventh season and to again be teaming up with Will” said Nubert, who is acknowledged as the smartest player in the squad academically.

“Last year was tough for me following my heart surgery, going into the season following a three month recovery period didn’t allow me to build up any fitness until the middle of the season and if I’m honest I didn’t feel 100% right until the last few months”

“I’ve been working hard since the end of the season to get my fitness back to where it was previously. I’m hoping this year I can not only support Will, but also push him to keep him on his toes throughout the season”

The relationship between the two goalies is a solid one and Sanderson is equally pleased to have some friendly competition for the starters spot.

“I am delighted to be returning alongside Nubie as a double act” added the London born stopper.

“We have great chemistry and get along really well. It’s reassuring to know that no matter which of us are in between the pipes the other will always be supportive”

Sanderson and Nubert were amongst the busiest goalies in the league last season facing a large volume of shots in both the league and cup competitions. They will both be hoping that their equipment faces a lot less rubber this time round, however as is shown in their performances they both thrive on the pressure.

Will ‘The Wall’

“By the end of the season I thought we had the best goaltending combination in the league” explained Redskins Head Coach Warren Rost.

“Not only did we have meaningful competition to start the games but they also managed to work as a team and support each other”

“I inherited this combination; it’s not broken so it’s not getting fixed.  The Streatham Branch of the goalies union is thriving and open for business”

For £50 you can have your name printed on a Sanderson or Nubert home jersey for the season and at the end of the campaign you get to keep it.

This will be a historic piece of Streatham game worn merchandise, especially as it will be the first season in the new rink.
