GLASGOW TO PLAY ‘ICE’ WITH RED BULL CRASHED ICE

For the first time ever, Scotland is set to welcome the UK qualifying round for the spectacular Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championships.

A fierce, heart-pumping assault course will be positioned in the festive ice rink at Glasgow’s George Square on Friday 13th December between 5pm and 7pm. Up to 100 competitors will take part in the action-packed race, speed skating around, over and under obstacles in a timed battle to discover who is skilful enough to earn a place at one of the international Crashed Ice Finals in 2014.

Registration is now open to all – although the competition is best suited to those who are confident and familiar with skating on ice at pace, such as ice hockey players. Competitors are expected to flock from throughout the UK – and perhaps even Europe.

Fellow qualifying events are taking place in cities such as Montreal, Toronto and Geleen.

Councillor Gordon Matheson, Leader of Glasgow City Council and chair of Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said: “Glasgow really comes alive during the festive season. There’s always a packed programme of fantastic events and attractions, and the city buzzes with excitement. This year, we have an amazing addition to that programme in the UK qualifying round for Red Bull’s Crashed Ice Championships, which is coming to Glasgow, and Scotland, for the first time – another coup for the city.

“We’re delighted to be working with Red Bull on this incredible event. It will deliver a spectacular centre-piece for our Glasgow on Ice celebrations and a hugely entertaining event for families of all ages. The energy and competitive spirit of Crashed Ice makes for a breath-taking spectacle and we’re looking forward to welcoming participants from across the UK and beyond.”
