Glasgow Clan 2 – 3 Dundee Stars (PS)
Glasgow Clan picked up a point, but lost out on the second one on penalty shots as Dundee Stars claimed a big victory on the road at Braehead Arena.
In a game where the Clan legends were in attendance ahead of Matt Haywood’s Testimonial, it was a keenly fought contest as the race for the play-offs really got going.
Patrick Killeen made a big save halfway through the first period when Anthony Beauregard dropped a pass for Kevin Dufour and the Stars forward saw his chance denied with a key block.
The only goal of the opening period came when Travis Ehrhardt lined up a shot from the blue line, with Chad Rau getting his stick on it to divert past Dundee’s goalie Alex Leclerc.
Matt Haywood went close as he was sprung in an advanced position, but his low effort was saved by Leclerc.
Stars levelled a couple of minutes into the second period when Egil Kalns turned and delivered a low shot that squeaked past Killeen to level the game up.
The visitors went 2-1 up with five to go in the second period as Beauregard was free in space to take a loose puck near the Clan crease and deliver a low finish.
Dundee went close through Shawn Boutin, who found room moving through the centre to deliver a shot on goal, which Killeen stopped.
The rebound popped up, which Boutin pounced on and Killeen showed great awareness to divert the chance wide.
Clan finally got the leveller in the third period when Matt Pufahl’s pass triggered a tussle in the centre, where Marcus Jonsson was in a position to force the puck over the line.
The game went the distance, into overtime and there was nothing to separate both sides in a nervy extra five minutes .
Matt Beca went closest with a low chance on Leclerc, but again, Dundee’s goalie wasn’t giving it up easily.
In the end, the contest had to be decided on penalty shots and although Nolan LaPorte picked up Clan’s first in the shootout, Dundee edged it through finishes from Kalns and Kevin Dufour to secure the result.
