Giants Take The Shine Off Stars Unbeaten Start

An excellent night for Paul Adey’s Giants as they ended Stars’ unbeaten run, moving into second in the early season standings just behind the Scots. With the game also doubling up as a Challenge Cup tie, the Giants skated to the top of Group A as a consequence.

Kevin Saurette led the Giants scoring with a hat trick whilst captain Adam Keefe was never out of the limelight with a double and a fight thrown in.

It’s a first loss in five for Stars and they pushed Giants all the way, coming back in the third period to within a goal with seven minutes left.

The home side opened the scoring at 9.31 when Keefe grabbed his first of the game but Stars restored equality when Bill Bagron fired home on the powerplay at 18.38.

Giants completely dominated the middle session, outshooting Stars by no less than 20 to 2. Saurette was the player taking the chances and he scored goals at 27.55 and 33.52 on the powerplay to see his side in control, leading 3-1.

Keefe added his second at 42.09 to give Giants a three-goal cushion but Jerry Pollastrone pulled one back at 49.36 and after an incident that saw Keefe go for a 2+10 for checking to the head along with a fighting call along with Stars’ Brock McPherson, Pollastrone made it a one-goal game when scoring at 52.57. However, only 12 seconds later a powerplay effort by Giants Saurette, completing his treble, gave Giants a crucial two-goal lead again and Stars were unable to mount a second recovery.
