Giants Star In 6-0 Home Win Over Dundee On Saturday
The Stena Line Belfast Giants won 6-0 against the Dundee Stars in an impressive performance on Saturday in Belfast. A shutout from netminder Stephen Murphy helped the side to a win that sees the Giants remain second place in the standings, one point behind the Cardiff Devils who have played two games more.
Stephen Murphy was the Giants starting netminder with Jeff Mason the home side’s scratch for Saturday’s Elite League clash.
The Giants dominated proceedings from the very start of the game, outshooting the Stars 17-5 in the opening period. The home side’s pressure paid off at exactly the 10 minute mark as Michael Forney opened the scoring when he hammered home a slapshot from the circle, assisted by Blair Riley and Chris Higgins.
At 17:54, the Giants doubled their lead when, after some nice work by Steve Saviano and Colin Shields, Saviano’s shot was deflected into the Stars net past netminder Joe Fallon.
James Desmarais, the hat-trick hero from Friday’s win over Nottingham, continued his weekend scoring after a nice pass from Colin Shields left the forward with an easy finish to put the Giants 3-0 ahead at 21:07.
Little over the halfway point in the game and, thanks to a sublime reverse / through the legs finish from Chris Higgins, the Giants extended their advantage to 4-0 after Michael Forney unselfishly passed to Higgins when two-on-one with Fallon.
The home side netted their third goal of the period and fifth of the game at 38:20 thanks to Jonathan Boxill managing to squeeze the puck home following some hard work around the net from himself, Adam Keefe and Matt Towe.
At 59:45 James Desmarais scored his second of the game when he finished off a rebound in front of the Dundee net after the Stars netminder had made the original save from Derrick Walser. Desmarais’ second of the game completed the scoring for a 6-0 home win at The SSE Arena.
The Giants return to action on Saturday and Sunday with back-to-back away games against the Sheffield Steelers. The next Giants home game are on Wednesday 8th February vs Cardiff Devils in the 2nd Leg of the Challenge Cup Semi-Final and Friday 10th February against the Dundee Stars in the Elite League, both games face-off 7pm.
