Giants Remain Top With Star Performance

The Stena Line Belfast Giants defeated the Dundee Stars away on Sunday, completing an impressive six point weekend. Sunday’s 6-3 win in Dundee was the Giants third away victory in as many days following defeats of the Fife Flyers and Glasgow Clan on Friday and Saturday respectively.

A double from Lewis Hook helped the Giants to consolidate their four point lead at the top of the Elite League standings as David Rutherford, Blair Riley, Dustin Johner and Kyle Baun were also on the scoresheet.

The Giants started with Tyler Beskorowany in goal and were missing Jonathan Ferland, Francis Beauvillier, Colin Shields, Matt Towe and Andrew Dickson.

Giants Double Trouble

Belfast took control of the game inside seven first period minutes. First it was David Rutherford who opened the scoring at 10:50 , assisted by Darcy Murphy and Mark Garside.

Lewis Hook netted his first of two on the night with a classy finish at 17:43, assisted by Patrick Dwyer and Kendall McFaull.

Belfast Withstand Stars Fightback

Lewis Hook made it 3-0 with 51 seconds on the clock in the middle period, assisted by Kyle Baun and Pat Dwyer.

However the hosts hit back almost immediately when Charles Corcoran scored only 10 seconds later, assisted by Jordan Cownie and Shawn Boutin.

Dustin Johner’s composed finish in front of the net at 28:19, assisted by Pat Dwyer and Curtis Leonard, restored the Giants three goal advantage.

Blair Riley, assisted by Kevin Raine and Darcy Murphy, made it 5-1 only 32 seconds later when he carried the puck into the Stars zone, danced around a Dundee defenceman and shot five-hole past netminder Pontus Sjogren.

Dundee made it a three goal game with six seconds remaining in the second period when Jordan Cownie grabbed his second point of the night, assisted by Kris Inglis and Brian Hart.

Giants See Off Stars

Shawn Boutin helped reduce the Giants advantage once again with little under four minutes remaining, assisted by Johan Andersson and Lukas Lundvald Nielsen.

However the Giants sealed the win with an empty net goal when Pat Dwyer and Lewis Hook set up Kyle Baun at 60:00.

The Giants will return to the road for back-to-back Elite League games next Saturday and Sunday. First up is the Nottingham Panthers on Saturday, face-off 7pm, before a first clash of the season against the Cardiff Devils on Sunday, face-off 6pm.
