Giants Get Weekend Off To A Flyer
Two goals each for David Rutherford, Steve Saviano and Jonathan Ferland gave the Stena Line Belfast Giants a 6-4 win over the Fife Flyers.
Friday’s win in Belfast sees the Giants move five points behind the first placed Cardiff Devils with the Manchester Storm the next opponents this Sunday at The SSE Arena.
Rutherford Double Gets Giants Going
Two David Rutherford strikes gave the Giants a commanding lead after 20 minutes of action. First, Rutherford fired home on the powerplay at 14:05, assisted by Blair Riley and Steve Saviano. Rutherford’s second came at 18:12, even strength, assisted by Ryan Martinelli and Blair Riley.
Flyers Comeback In Middle Period
Jonathan Ferland further extended the hosts lead at 25:01, assisted by Matt Towe and Ryan Martinelli before Steve Saviano’s shorthanded strike at 33:32, assisted by Jonathan Ferland.
Evan Bloodoff started the Fife comeback at 33:53, getting the visitors on the scoresheet, assisted by Liam Heels and Peter LeBlanc. Charlie Mosey’s goal at 35:53, assisted by Danick Gauthier and Chase Schaber, halved the Flyers deficit before Bloodoff scored his second of the game at 37:27, assisted by Ian Young and Peter LeBlanc.
Giants Seal Friday Flyers Win
Steve Saviano’s second of the game at 44:39 restored a two goal lead for the home side, assisted by Blair Riley and Ryan Martinelli.
However the Flyers kept coming and Ricards Birzins’ powerplay goal at 47:21, assisted by Shayne Stockton an Chase Schaber, made it a one goal game yet again.
The Flyers could not find a way past Jackson Whistle and the Giants defence and it was Jonathan Ferland who would round off the home win with an empty net finish at 59:12, assisted by Dustin Johner and Ryan Martinelli.
