Giants Forward Mark Garside Scores For Team GB

Stena Line Belfast Giants forward Mark Garside says the confidence flowed after Great Britain got their first goal in this afternoon’s 4-1 victory over Romania.

GB, who were beaten 4-0 by Croatia yesterday, secured their first win of the IIHF World Championship (Division 1B) tournament in Vilnius.

Garside, who scored GB’s fourth goal with a neat wraparound finish, said: “We had not won in while and it was good to get that first goal and get some confidence.

“We had to get out of the mental thing we were in after losing nine games in a row. We went in at zero-zero after the first period but just kept going.

“Everyone stuck to the plan but, unlike yesterday, we scored and from then on we got better.”

Garside’s Belfast team-mate Colin Shields also scored, as he joined former Belfast coach Paul Adey in fifth place in the GB all-time goalscoring charts with 28 goals.

There’s play-by-play coverage on GB against Lithuania (6pm UK time) on the BBC Sport website on Wednesday and live television coverage on Premier Sports TV.
