Giants Finish Scottish Road Trip With A Flyer
The Stena Line Belfast Giants moved into first place of Challenge Cup Group A with a 5-1 win against the Fife Flyers on Sunday. The road win was a perfect response following Saturday’s defeat in Edinburgh and leaves the Giants on 10 points from 6 games played with Dundee on the same number of points, however the Stars have played one game more. The Giants and Stars will clash on Sunday 1st December with Belfast knowing a win will see them top the group and take on the 4th seeded team from Group B.
Indeed it was the Giants who got off to a flyer with Cody Brookwell scoring the game’s opening goal after only ten seconds with a fine shot past Fife netminder Kevin Regan – with Paul Adey’s team determined to prove a point following the previous night’s defeat. It was Kevin Saurette who added a second Giants goal of the night, firing in off the crossbar after 27:27 after receiving a pass from Evan Cheverie. The scoring continued little over a minute later, this time it was Dustin Whitecotton to find the net, assisted by Gareth Roberts at 28:49.
Scottish-born forward Colin Shields further extended the Giants lead at 37:48 unassisted with his 7th goal and 18th point of the season. Kevin Saurette then rounded off the visitors’ scoring at 56:16 with a fine effort for his second goal of the game before the Flyers ended the Giants hopes of a shutout with Matt Reber firing past Andrew Dickson with 55 seconds of the game remaining.
