Giants Edged By Devils In Shootout

The Stena Line Belfast Giants went to overtime and penalty shots for the first time this season and narrowly lost out to the Cardiff Devils who claim two points in the first game of this weekends double header at the Odyssey Arena.

The game was action packed throughout with both teams combining for a total of 88 penalty minutes, resulting in 12 fruitless power play opportunities.

The Devils got on the score sheet first with Luke Piggott slotting the puck past Murphy at 5.55 of the opening period to give the visitors an early advantage. The Giants however equalised minutes later with Colin Shields finding the back of the net, firing past Devils man of the match Dan Lacosta who turned away a total of 30 shots throughout.

An incident that seen players squaring off early in the second period resulted in 56 minutes in penalties and a game ejection for Devils Andrew Conboy who was assessed a match penalty for excessive roughness, presenting the home team with a 5 minute power play opportunity.

No further scoring in regulation or overtime meant penalty shots were required. Jake Morrisette and Dustin Whitecotton both scored in the first round to force sudden death and Morrisette would again find the net to secure a much welcome 2 points for the visiting Cardiff Devils.

Both teams return to the Odyssey Arena ice on Sunday at 4pm. Tickets are still available from the Odyssey Arena Box Office in person or by calling (028) 9073 9074 or online by clicking here.
