Giants Edge Stingrays With 3-2 Win At The Odyssey
The Stena Line Belfast Giants returned to winning ways on Friday night when they took on the Hull Stingrays. The Giants went ahead 3-0 with goals from Mike Kompon, Davey Phillips and Ray Sawada – additionally, Kevin Saurette recorded his 500th career point after his assist on the final goal. However, a tense finish with goals from Cory Tanaka and Carl Lauzon couldn’t overcome the strong start from the home team.
In a first period where the teams shared 10 minutes in the penalty box, visiting netminder David Brown wasn’t given much time to settle in, with shots coming thick and fast from the Giants forwards. It was no surprise then at 5:58 when Mike Kompon broke the deadlock after Jeff Mason found him in the slot. The Giants maintained momentum and at 17:41 after some great passing, Davey Phillips was there to double the lead going into the first intermission.
Ray Sawada ensured the Giants extended their lead quickly in the middle frame at just 20:45 when he scored on the powerplay. However, Hull fought back and Cory Tanaka wrote his name on the scoresheet at 28:20 to reduce the deficit to a two-goal lead for the home team yet again.
Fans in the final period may have felt more than a little nervous after the Giants handed the Stingrays a massive 5-on-3 opportunity. However, a stellar effort from the home team on the penalty kill prevented anything arising from this. Unfortunately, soon after Carl Lauzon fired past Chubak short-handed to narrow the scoreline to 3-2 at 47:38. Hull continued to pile on the pressure, pulling Brown with a minute left in play but Belfast put everything they had in front of any shots and ensured they left with the win.
