Giants Comeback Ends In Overtime Loss

The Stena Line Belfast Giants came back from 2-0 down at the end of the first period, to tie things up at 3-3 with little over 5 minutes remaining, only to lose out in overtime with Dundee scoring their winner with 60 seconds remaining. The Giants still pick up a point from the overtime loss and remain top of Challenge Cup Group A.

The Giants got off to the worst start, conceding two goals in the opening period at home without reply. First, Vinny Scarsella, opened the scoring for the Stars at 4:17 with a shorthanded effort followed by Joey Sides’ powerplay strike with 94 seconds remaining in the period.

However the Giants responded well following the first intermission as David Rutherford finished well, assisted by Brandon Benedict and Michael Quesnele, at 24:17. Matt Nickerson then dropped the gloves with Craig Cescon at 26:27 with the Giants Defenceman getting the better of the Stars player.

Mark Garside hammered home a slapshot from the blueline at 30:43 as the Giants tied things up after trailing early in the game, helped by Stephen Murphy turning away 11 shots during the second period.

Into the final period and it was the visitors who got the ‘go-ahead’ goal as Joey Sides doubled his tally for the night at 42:13 to put the Dundee Stars 3-2 in front. At 54:27, the Giants were level again as Colin Shields got on the end of Michael Quesnele’s pass to score right in front of the Boomerang Corner end of the rink.

However it was the Stars who would claim the additional point, with Brett Switzer breaking away during 3-om-3 overtime to slot the puck into the Giants net and take the road win. The Giants are back in Challenge Cup action on Sunday with a road game against the Braehead Clan, face-off 6pm. Belfast’s next home game is Saturday 1st October with their first home Elite League game of the season, vs Cardiff Devils at 7pm.
