Giants Capitalise In Edinburgh To Complete Four Point Weekend
The Stena Line Belfast Giants won 8-3 away against the Edinburgh Capitals on Sunday to complete a four point weekend. Following Saturday’s 5-4 win in Braehead, goals from Boxill, Higgins, Saviano, Keefe, Nickerson and Desmarais as well as two from Shields gave the Giants a second win in as many nights. With those two wins, the Giants matched the Cardiff Devils weekend results to remain one point behind the Elite League leaders.
The Stena Line Belfast Giants opened the scoring at 3:18 when Colin Shields found the back of the Capitals net, assisted by James Desmarais.
However the visitors lead was short-lived as Jaroslav Hertl equalised 22 seconds later for the Capitals, assisted by Taylor MacDougall and Karel Hromas.
Colin Shields grabbed his and his team’s second goal of the game at 17:36 when he deflected Derrick Walser’s shot past Capitals netminder Fullerton while on the powerplay.
Jared Staal brought the Edinburgh Capitals level when his shot deflected into the Giants net at 22:11, assisted by Richards Grigors.
The Giants grabbed their third goal of the game at 26:48 when Jonathan Boxill fired home, assisted by Derrick Walser and Matt Towe.
Once again, the Edinburgh Capitals equalised when Jared Staal’s shot deflected off Matt Tipoff and squeezed into the Giants net at 33:15.
Chris Higgins pulled the Giants ahead with a fine unassisted goal when he rounded the Capitals netminder at 14:04.
Steve Saviano extended the visitors lead to 5-3 at 39:16 with a fierce one-timer on the powerplay, assisted by Michael Quesnele and Colin Shields.
Giants Captain Adam Keefe made it 6-3 when his wrist shot ripped into the Capitals net at 45:38.
Matt Nickerson gave the Giants a four goal advantage over the hosts when his slapshot screamed past netminder Fullerton, assisted by Mark Garside, at 48:36.
Nickerson then turned from scorer to provider when his assist led to the Giants 8th and final goal of the game, scored by James Desmarais at 57:18.
Next up for the Giants is Wednesday’s Challenge Cup Semi-Final 2nd Leg against the Cardiff Devils. Belfast lead 5-4 from the 1st Leg and face-off is 7pm at The SSE Arena, Belfast.
