Game Recap: Bison 5, Phantoms 2

The DALROD sponsored Phantoms head coach Jon Kynaston admitted his team didn’t work hard enough to pick up a first away success of the season tonight.

The city side went down 5-2 at Basingstoke despite goals from import defenceman Marcel Petran and forward Luke Ferrara as they endured an eighth successive road trip without victory this term.

And Kynaston admits some players are struggling to perform on the bigger ice surfaces the club have encountered during a run of three away games in six days.

Kynaston said: “Basingstoke worked a lot harder than we did for the majority of the game. In all truth we made it a bit too easy for them.”

“The second period in particular seems to be causing us a problem on the road at the moment.

“We performed strongly in the third period, but we were second-best before that.

“One or two guys are struggling on the larger ice surfaces and that’s something we need to look to address.”

Petran struck with a trademark powerplay blast to reduce Phantoms’ arrears to 2-1 late in the opening period after they had conceded to Aaron Connolly and Tomas Karpov in powerplay situations.

Andrew Melachrino then made it 3-1 before Ferrara responded with a peach of goal, but Karpov completed his hat-trick with two further strikes in the second session to seal Phantoms’ fate.

Phantoms are back in the familiar surroundings of the Peterborough Ice Arena tomorrow (Sunday) when they entertain Bracknell (5.30pm) in an important clash for position in the lower half of the standings.

Forward Nicky Watt will miss a fourth successive match due to a groin problem but Kynaston is hopeful Marc Levers may be involved after missing the trip to Basingstoke with back trouble.

“All home games are big games,” added Kynaston. “It is still relatively early days in the season but Bracknell are certainly a team we want to be beating.”

Bracknell were thumped 7-0 by Guildford on Sunday night.
