Fwd: Wednesday report: Blaze lose place in Challenge Cup

Coventry Blaze lost their place in the Challenge Cup as the Manchester Storm progressed to the quarterfinals with a 2-3 win at the Skydome Arena.

In the do or die game, the Blaze fell behind early as Adam Hughesman beat Jamie Phillips for the first time at 12.31.

Hughesman then scored again at 14.25, giving the Storm a 0-2 lead going into the first intermission.

Coventry rallied in the second and were rewarded when Matt Pohlkamp registered on the powerplay on 33.49.

The game was level at 43.19 when a speculative effort from Blaze Captain Drew Schiestel found its way into the net to make it 2-2.

After killing two consecutive minor penalties to David Broll, Coventry pushed for a winner, but a defensive mistake proved costly as Layne Ulmer netted for the visitors at 57.59.

With a late powerplay and pulling of netminder Phillips for the extra skater, Blaze piled on the pressure, but time was to run out on their cup campaign as Storm celebrated a 2-3 victory and place in the cup quarter finals vs. Sheffield Steelers.
