Furnival Fired up for New Season
“We’ve got to put the work in to win†– that’s the call from Dragons forward Simon Furnival, as he prepares for a sixth successive year at Chester Road.
Furnival agreed terms on a return to Deeside this week, with Head Coach Lol Paul building the club’s first squad under new owners Red Hockey.
The 30-year-old frontman amassed 31 points last season and is likely to be a thorn in the side of many teams in the Laidler Conference.
He said: “At the start of the season, it is all about finding a way of working together well. We can’t go into games expecting to win, just because of what’s happened this summer.
“We’ve got to put the work in to win throughout the year. There’s no point in saying we will win the league, as the season hasn’t even started yet.
“Red Hockey have already done a lot for us this summer, and it means we have got a very good opportunity to do well during the coming season.â€
Furnival’s physical reputation saw him collect 119 penalty minutes last year, as The Dragons finished fifth – eight points adrift of the play-off places.
The Deeside stalwart expects to fill a similar role in the coming campaign, albeit with a brief to steer clear of the penalty box as much as possible.
He added: “I can put the puck in the net, but I’m also a fighter, when needed. Other teams come in and I tend to get respect because of that.
“I am a team player, though, so I definitely won’t go looking for trouble during games. If people approach me, I won’t be a pushover.
“It is all about protecting your team-mates, and not just the netminders.â€
A return to Flintshire was always on the cards for Furnival, who is looking forward to the changes expected by Red Hockey’s arrival.
“It wasn’t a difficult decision at all to sign again for next season,†he said.
“This is my home and the lads in the team are like a family. We have got a great setup here, and with Red Hockey coming in, it can only get better.â€
