From Catching Pucks To Catching Fish

Earlier this month, former Belfast Giants netminder Chris McGimpsey officially opened his new business venture with the help of two fellow Giants net minders.

Furrow & Bait is a traditional Fish & Chips Restaurant with a contemporary twist and is open for business on Mill Street, Newtownards. Current Giant goaltending duo Stephen Murphy and Andrew Dickson got a taste of the new menu which will see special discounts for pensioners, students and now Belfast Giants ticket holders.

McGimpsey was the first ever local player to sign with the Giants back in 2003 and played 3 seasons backing up Colin Ryder, Martin Klempa and Mike Minard throughout his career. He made headlines in 2004 when he shut out the Basingstoke Bison in a 2-0 thriller and remains the only Northern Irish netminder to ever earn a shut out in Elite League history.

McGimpsey spoke about the site in Newtownards where his new shop is located:
“The site has been a chip shop for 40 years. My family has been in business, in one form or another for 45 years in this area. My grandparents got started in business running the post office on Mill Street and I’m excited to be going into business a stones throw away from that building.

“Our plan is simple, serve quality food at a good price and keep our customers coming back again and again. We are excited to bring a fresh perspective to an old classic in Newtownards.”

Furrow & Bait have deliveries from 5-8pm nightly and are open for breakfast from 9:30am daily. The location is 183 Mill Street Newtownards and there is a discount for all Giants fans – Just bring your game ticket or show your season pass and avail of the 10% discount off your bill.
