Former Devil Sam Smith back for more with Cardiff Fire!
Cardiff Fire are delighted to announce the return of 6’3” forward Sam Smith.
Sam’s Career has seen him moving from juniors in Cardiff to North America where he joined the Okanagan Rockets in the BCMML in Canada. In his 2nd season there Sam finished top scorer in the academy with 57 points in 52 games. The following season Sam headed to the US to play for the Dubuque Thunderbirds of the CSHL junior league.
In 2010 Sam made his return from North America and signed his first pro contract in the UK with the Cardiff Devils. That season the Cardiff Devils broke the Guinness world record for the number of wins in a row. Sam played on the 3rd line scoring an impressive 36 points in 58 games. Sam also represented GB U20’s that season and also made the long squad for the GB men’s senior team. Additionally in 2010 Sam was voted best young British player of the year, a fantastic achievement.
Before joining Fire Sam had a further year in the Elite League with the Coventry Blaze and joined the Swindon Wildcats in the EPL scoring 33 points for the Wildcats. A further two season spent in Dubai’s top league then saw him return to Cardiff and the Fire where he was a standout player for the club.
Mark Cuddihy Added “Sam was a top priority to bring back for this first season in the 2nd tier, he’s no stranger to top level hockey in the UK and his experience and skill set were imperative to us in this league. Sam was a leader for us last season, he joined us part way through the season and immediately hit the ground running. He’s a powerful player and his shot is ridiculous, he’s still young at 25 and in great shape. He’s a real good dressing room guy and a huge asset to our club”
Sam Smith continued “Delighted to be joining up again with the Fire this upcoming season. Mark is putting together an exciting on ice product and I’m really looking forward to building on our success from the last few seasons and carrying this over to the new look NIHL set up”
