Flames win OT thriller against league leaders

A John Dunbar goal 47 seconds into 3 on 3 overtime decided the evening as the Flames snapped a Cardiff Devils 13 game winning run with a 3-2 win over the League Leaders.  To start, what had been a pretty well executed penalty kill by the Flames ended with a goal anyway when a Devils shot from the blueline was deflected by Joey Martin to give them the early lead that stood up through the period’s conclusion. In a similar reverse early in the 2nd just as a strong Devil’s penalty kill was expiring Brett Ferguson tipped in a Ben Davies feed to bring the teams back to even terms.  About 6 minutes into the 3rd, Ian Watters put Spectrum’s men in front, but in a nearly identical replay of their first powerplay goal, Martin tipped home another point shot to even it at 2 each and, ultimately, guarantee each team a point before Dunbar’s winner shortly into the extra period.

“That was a pretty exciting game against a very good hockey team,” said Head Coach Paul Dixon.

“They are not in the league lead by accident. They move the puck around probably as well as or better than anyone, they created some great scoring chances, and they easily could have won tonight instead of us.”

“Chris had a terrific game at the back and made some unbelievable stops to keep us right there, and we were able to close the deal on a couple of our better chances, including John’s beauty in overtime, to grab a win.”

“We need to quickly shift focus now to be ready for what is always a tough, physical game in Manchester Tonight.”
