Flames take 4 point weekend with win at Fife
Despite being outshot by a nearly 2 – 1 margin, the Flames went into Fife and fronted a 42 save Wouter Peeters night with just enough offence to complete a 4 point weekend thanks 4-3 win over the Flyers.
After carrying much of the play in the opening frame, and limiting Flames to just 4 shots, Flyers grabbed a lead in the 18th minute with a Mike Cazzola strike.
The visitors burst out of the 2nd period gates with 3 goals to take a lead only for Flyers to draw it back level shortly after. John Dunbar equalized just 15 seconds after re-start and Jamie Crooks had Flames in front less than 2 minutes later. Owen Griffiths made it a 2-goal difference at 27:23 but Cazzola’s 2nd of the evening 23 seconds after that had them back within a single, and a late period Chase Shaber goal squared it at 3 each to start the 3rd.
In the back half of the 3rd, Ian Watters collected the winner ahead of a final couple of minutes of pressure with Flyers net empty, attacking with 6 skaters then later 6 on 4 while Flames served a last minute penalty they had to kill off to secure the 4 point weekend haul.
“Exactly a week ago Fife visited us and we dominated a lot of the game only to see them drive away with a win,” said Head Coach Paul Dixon.
“Tonight, I am quite sure they are feeling the same way. They badly outshot us, and we relied on timely scoring, great goaltending and excellent penalty killing to nurse ourselves into the winner’s circle.”
“Busting out in the 2nd period with the 3 goals was huge for us. We lost that lead, but after being shut down entirely last weekend it showed us that we can score goals here and it meant we could retain the belief that a win was going to be possible.”
“We have not had many 4 point league weekends, if any this season, so it is a great feeling to be making that long trip home on the back of maximum success over 2 games.”
