Flames shutout Stars 3-0

A late 1st period opener by Calle Ackered was followed by Ben Davies and Geoff Walker strikes in the 2nd which was more than enough offence to support a Brian Stewart shutout as the Flames posted a 3-0 win over the visiting Dundee Stars.  It looked like the opening frame may close without a goal but Ackered one timed a 5 on 3 powerplay set up by John Dunbar just 9 seconds from the buzzer to help Spectrum’s men to a 1-0 lead.  Early in the middle set Davies doubled the difference and just past the halfway mark, Walker made it a 3-0 gap that carried over into the final stanza.  With time ticking away in the 3rd, all that was left was the question of the clean sheet and Stewart turned away the final 6 period shots for a perfect 17 save evening.

“After the disappointment of Sunday against Coventry,” said Paul Dixon, “it feels a lot better to have taken advantage of the quick turnaround to get a win under our belts ahead of Saturday’s visit by Braehead.”

“I thought we were full value for the win against Dundee.”

“We had some good looks offensively.  I think we were able to mostly limit their opportunities, and when they did get through Brian was there to pick us up.”

“He has not had a lot of cracks on home ice this season after getting back from long term injury, and he definitely made the most of it.  We are happy not only for us but for him personally that he was able to post a shutout so it was a good night overall front to back.  We are looking forward to a finishing off the training week ahead of games on Saturday and Sunday.”
