Flames get point but fall 2-1 on penalties

A late Kruise Reddick goal levelled the game at a goal each and secured a table point against Cardiff Devils at Spectrum, but the visitors outscored the hosts 2-0 on penalties to secure a 2-1 win and the extra point.

The clubs traded penalties at 16:39, but Flames got the worst of the distribution when Jamie Crooks had a 5-minute major for checking to the head and a game misconduct.  Once the teams cleared a couple of minutes of 4 on 4, Devils went to work with a 3-minute Major powerplay and Stephen Dixon took advantage 33 seconds from period time to give his side a lead.

Spectrum’s men managed to dispose of the remainder of the penalty with no further damage, then went to the powerplay themselves on back to back occasions near the games midway point, but the period came and went with the single goal still standing through 40 minutes.

In the 50th minute, Flames finally pulled level when Kruise Reddick got his stick on a Jordan Rowley shot that closed out the regulation offence for either side setting up 5 minute 3 on 3 showdown, but that couldn’t break the deadlock either and penalties were the order of the day where goals by Joey Haddad and Matt Pope decided the evening.

“It is always disappointing to lose on penalties but it was an important league point so we can take away a bit of consolation that we did not leave the rink empty handed,” admitted Paul Dixon.

“We didn’t have a really effective start to the game and Travis really kept us in there to allow us the opportunity to build up to a bit more pressure and possession later on to at least come out of there with that point.”

“When it came to overtime, which is often something we excel at, we didn’t have the puck nearly enough to be as dangerous as we can sometimes be in that situation. Credit to Cardiff not just for the game overall that they played but for mostly closing us down in the extra period then making the most of their chances when we were down to penalties.”

“We have to now look ahead to returning to them on Saturday and hopefully we can find a way to produce a few more goals and give ourselves a better chance at a win.”
