Flames End Phantoms Play-Off Dreams
The DALROD sponsored Peterborough Phantoms completed their 2012-13 season on Sunday evening with a 7-2 defeat at the hands of the Guildford Flames, to end their Play-Off hopes.
Already trailing 4-1 from Saturday nights encounter at the Peterborough Arena, the Phantoms knew they had an uphill battle, but were bolstered by a large contingent of travelling fans, who out sang the Flames supporters for from the initial puck-drop though to the final buzzer.
The game started at the same tempo as Satyrday’s, with both teams finishing their checks and refusing to back down. It was the Flames who opened the scoring on 13.20 when Dean Holland slotted the puck past Damien King in the Phantoms goal. Phantoms took under 2 minutes to draw level when Maris Ziedins, playing his last competitive game for the Phantoms, fired hom Jozef Sladoks pass on 14:44. A frantic spell at the end of the period saw the Flames regain the lead on 16.17 when former Phantom Nathan Remple scored.
Early goals from Curtis Huppe on 22.04 and Branislav Kvetan on 27.46 gave the Flames a 4-1 second period lead, and effectively killed off the game. Despite now needing 6 goals to draw level the Phantoms stuck to their gameplan of pushing the League Champions all the way.
Ben Campbell made it 5-1 to the Flames on 43.59 and on 51.06 Jez Lundin got himself on the scoresheet with the Flames 6th of the night. That goal saw James Hadfield replace Mark Lee in the Flames goal and Dan Lane replace Damien King in the Phantoms goal. James Ferrara pulled back a consolation goal of the Phantoms on 55.19 before Curtis Huppe netted his second of the night on 58.37 to make it 7-2. There was still time for a bit more action when on 59.07 Phantoms Greg Pick and Flames Scott Greenfield dropped the gloves.
Man of the Match went to Mark Lee for the Flames and James Ferrara for the Phantoms.
After the game Jamie Line announced his retirement from Hockey due to work commitments. Jamie, along with rest of the Phantoms, will be hitting the ice in Peterborough one more time, on the 13th April in Maris Ziedins’ Testimonial, when the current Phantoms take on the treble winning Phantoms. Face-Off is at 4.30pm
