Flames add Wouter Peeters

Guildford Flames have added former Chicago Blackhawks 3rd round pick Wouter Peeters to the netminding group.  The 6’5”, 220lb Belgium native opened the season on a tryout contract in Finland with Liiga side Tappara.  The 21 year old iced part of 2018-2019 with Lincoln Stars in the United States Junior Hockey League and finished up in Finland at the pro level with Junkkarit HT Kalajoki in Suomi-Sarja where he iced 8 times, posting a 91 save percentage in 5 league starts and 88% in 3 playoff appearances. He also made his national team debut with Belgium at the Division 2A world championships last Spring.

After the bulk of a junior career spent at Red Bull Academy in Austria, Peeters Iced 2016-2017 with Jokerit U20’s, had a 90 save percentage in 23 starts, and also made an appearance in the KHL with the senior side.

“We had always intended on signing a 3rd goaltender to our roster so that is nothing new” said Head Coach Paul Dixon.

“Wouter is a little different from our normal history in that he is a much younger, less experienced goaltender than we have normally had. He has only just come out of Junior hockey and is making the transition to men’s levels.”

“He is a big framed goaltender, he is hungry to prove himself, and he has shown a some promise which is evidenced by his draft standing and also some of the opportunities he has had at this very early stage of his career.”

“This could be a good spot for him to gain playing time without having to take on the whole load.  Having the experience and track record of Travis, who has had a good start to the season, mixed with a youg guy brimming with desire could prove to be a really good addition to the existing Fullerton/Mike Will mix.”

“There could be a lot of upside with Wouter and it is exciting to look outside the usual box a bit and go away from a more traditional pattern of roster management.  He will be arriving this week, and we are looking forward to welcoming him to the team.”
