Fischtown Claim Series With Sunday Win In Belfast

The Fischtown Pinguins made it two wins over the Stena Line Belfast Giants in as many nights with an emphatic 7-1 victory at The SSE Arena, Belfast on Sunday. The German DEL side were ruthless in front of net and their additional few weeks of pre-season training compared to the Giants showed.

The Pinguins followed up Saturday’s narrow 4-3 win with an impressive display and were 5-0 up with less than 12 minutes gone. Goals from Cory Quirk, Rob Borden, Jason Bast, Christoph Körner and Cody Lampl saw the German side take control of the game

After the visitors’ fifth goal, the home side began to grow into the game – forcing the Pinguins onto the back foot for the rest of the period and were unlucky not to score while on the powerplay. In fact, the Giants had the puck in the back of the net thanks to a nice move by David Rutherford, however the Referee waved off the goal judging that the puck had crossed the line after the opening 20 minutes were up.

Head Coach Derrick Walser introduced netminder Andrew Dickson into the game for the second period. The Giants began the second period the brighter of the two sides and it was the Bremerhaven netminder who stood between the hosts and breaking their deadlock as he stopped Colin Shields’ breakaway effort with a last ditch pad save. However the visitors struck to make it 6-0 at 27:15 through Jack Combs.

The Giants prevented a shutout for the Pinguins thanks to some great work by Brandon Benedict and a nice finish by David Rutherford at 28:31.

However the second period ended 7-1 with of the Fischtown Pinguins netting past Dickson at 33:11 with Marian Dejdar rounding off the game’s scoring.
