Cardiff Fire got their campaign under way with a 3-1 win at Ice arena Wales over an impressive Swindon team that included a couple of big names in Swindon hockey, including Abu Saada and Ryan Aldridge.

A big crowd witnesses the season opener that was boosted by the very successful launch of our Mini Sports club initiative. Youngsters from ST Albans football club and St Julian’s HSOB were the first teams to come onboard. A good evening was certainly had by all, we are delighted with the launch and look forward to growing it through Dan Blakemore thought the season.

It was the Fire that opened the scoring through debutant Jon Nash after 12 mins, Alan Armour and Ricky Deacon started the break out and a slick move past the D man by Nash brought a slicker move to beat Bird in the Swindon goal. Swindon worked very hard and got their reward from Yousif Abu Saada with a goal just 5 mins later on 17 mins. Period ended 1-1

The 2nd period was a busy one for the referees handing out 4 minor penalties to the Fire and 2 to Swindon. It was tough for the Fire to get any real momentum killing 8 mins of penalties. But the breakthrough came on the powerplay, Alan Armour again making the play. Armour picked up the puck and looked to shoot on a sprawled Bird in the Swindon net, only to go back door for Ricky Deacon to fire Cardiff into the lead.

Swindon again battled hard and never gave up, 2 breakaways lead to Joey Myers pulling off some big saves. Fire got the breathing space they needed with a 3rd through Slovakian Robert Sedlak with just 45 secs to go in the game.

So a great start to the 2016/17 season. The next home game will see Cardiff Fire make our debut in the NIHL cup against Slough Jets, a club with a great history in British hockey. The game will take place on Sunday 9th October 6pm face-off
