Experience Stays, Youth Is Added
The RTL sponsored Widnes Wild are delighted to announce the return of experienced 33 year-old netminder Tom McDonald. Alongside Tom, the RTL Wild are extremely excited to welcome Jonah and Ethan Armstrong to the fold completing the netminding quartet for the 2016/17 season with fan favourite Greg Ruxton also announced as returning three weeks ago.
McDonald is well known amongst fans as the ‘Old head’ that has been called up when needed by RTL Wild coaching team. After a year away from the sport, Tom returned to the Wild last season as third choice goalie, but also as goalie coach for the whole club. Tom spends many a night helping the youth goalies within the Wild Academy as well as being a natural leader for Greg, Jonah and Ethan to look up to. Coach Mckenzie is glad to have McDonald back for the 16/17 campaign;
“Tom is a guy that is a very valuable asset to the RTL Widnes Wild Ice Hockey Club. He helps all our goalies from youth to senior as well as playing when needed. I am certain that like every hockey player, Tom would love to play more, but I am also certain that he is proud to pass on his experience and wealth of knowledge to the younger goalies. We are very happy to have such a great guy like Tom back with us next season.â€
Jonah and Ethan Armstrong are brothers that currently reside in St Asaph in Wales. Jonah is the youngest player to sign for the RTL Widnes Wild so far and is one of the hottest prospects in the country at just 16 years-old. Ethan is slightly older at 18 years-old and is looking to develop and establish himself with a break out year in NIHL2 Laidler Conference. Both netminders have been under the guidance of coach Mckenzie prior to this season as they have played most of their junior hockey with Telford juniors as well as spells at Deeside. Mckenzie feels that the four netminders he has signed will provide competition amongst the squad;
“I am really happy to have Tom, Jonah and Ethan on board next season, I am really hoping for these three guys to push Greg and challenge for that number one spot. I think under Tom and Greg’s guidance, Jonah and Ethan will grow and develop as netminders and as young men. We are hoping that Jonah will get some Under 20’s ice next year too but that is something we will look at throughout the summer. I know what Tom and Greg bring, but with Ethan and Jonah coming in, I know what these guys have to offer too having worked with them in Telford, so I am delighted that they have committed to us for next season.â€
Tom McDonald will continue to wear his #37 jersey with Jonah wearing #21 and Ethan wearing #29, you can Own & Loan any of these players Home or Away jerseys for just £75 each. For more information, contact; firstname.lastname@example.org.
