“Exceptional†is the word from Watkins after MK win
Tom Watkins praised an “exceptional performance†from his Telford Tigers players after they beat Milton Keynes Lightning 3-1 on Sunday night.
The win handed Telford their first four-point weekend of the campaign, closing the gap to fifth-placed Swindon Wildcats to just a single point.
A first period goal settled Tigers nerves in front of a large crowd at Telford Ice Rink, before an equaliser from the visitors after the break.
But further strikes later in the game sealed victory for the reigning EPL champions.
Watkins, who has now guided his side to four wins in the last six games, said: “I thought it was an exceptional performance from the boys tonight, and we played the best we have all season.
“To shut down a side like Milton Keynes is very good, especially as we outshot them by 42 to 16 shots. Our special teams were also excellent tonight.
“But there was also a great atmosphere in the rink and that made it fun to play. You could see that pass onto the players, and their work ethic was incredible.â€
Defenceman Sam Zajac was on target for Telford after 17 minutes, before that equaliser from Milton Keynes at the start of the second session.
Nathan Salem handed the lead back to Telford with a well-taken strike on 28 minutes, following a defence-splitting pass from Peter Szabo.
And The Tigers took advantage of an attacking zone face-off to score a third – and shorthanded – goal thanks to Phil Hill, in the final session.
Watkins added: “Nathan has been very good all weekend and it’s good to have him back in the side. He’s very quick and a great offensive threat.
“Everyone was chipping in tonight, like they were last night, giving us a different set of scorers. We need that secondary scoring.
“Silver ran a good face-off for a shorthanded goal from Phil Hill. We peppered Dean Skinns and kept putting pucks in the right places, which was key for us.â€
The Tigers have a night off next Saturday, before returning on Sunday to host Sheffield Steeldogs at Telford Ice Rink (6pm).
