EPL to stay at ten teams for new season
The English Ice Hockey Association are delighted to announce that next season’s English Premier Ice Hockey League will once again feature ten teams for the 2016/17 season.
At the league owners meeting on Wednesday, the defending champions Basingstoke Bison alongside: Bracknell Bees, Guildford Flames, Hull Pirates, Manchester Phoenix, Milton Keynes Lightning, Peterborough Phantoms, Sheffield Steeldogs, Swindon Wildcats and Telford Tigers were all confirmed as participating for the forthcoming season.Â
Following one of the most exciting seasons in the league’s history, the ten teams will once again partake in three home and away ties against each other – with the first pairing counting towards the EPIHL Cup, which Guildford will be defending.
After the conclusion of the regular season, the top eight teams will qualify for the playoffs, culminating in the traditional Finals at Coventry where, once again, Guildford will be looking to secure back-to-back success.
The season will start at the beginning of September, with the Coventry finals weekend moving back one week to the weekend of the 8th and 9th April 2017 to coincide with the change of date for the GB senior men’s World Championship event.Â
With the additional of an optional extra ‘non-EIHA trained player’ for each side, it promises to be yet another exceptional year for fans and teams across the country.
EIHA Chairman Ken Taggart said:Â “I am satisfied the EPIHL teams are working diligently on challenges to improve aspects of this league. Today’s meeting has all ten teams going forward together and rest assured, the league will be competitive and entertaining to supporters.Â
I anticipate another season where the unexpected provides us with another action packed, fast games with great players , and team surprises along the way.Â
Great luck to all the teams and let’s all support the league and our local team”.
