Edinburgh Capitals Punish Giants In Scotland

The Stena Line Belfast Giants fell to a 5-3 defeat in Edinburgh against the Capitals on Saturday night. Despite a hat-trick from Evan Cheverie, the top of the table Giants could not prevent a defeat to the team who sit bottom of the Elite League and claimed only their third win of the season to leave the Giants stunned in only their fourth loss of the season.

The game started well for the Giants with Evan Cheverie deflecting a Chris Higgins shot into the net at 4:11. However the Capitals began to grow into the game and with Cody Brookwell sitting out a tripping penalty, Jade Portwood slotted home for his 4th goal of the season and his team’s opening goal to keep the score even after the opening period.

The home side started the second period brightly and Tomas Horna slammed the puck home at 23:19 from a great pass from player/coach Richard Hartmann to help his side take the lead for the first time of the night. However the Giants got themselves right back into the game with Evan Cheverie scoring his and his team’s second goal, assisted by Kevin Saurette and Chris Higgins at 25:00. Cheverie, in a rich vein of form, regained the Giants lead only 42 seconds later, finishing off a fine move which saw Higgins weave his way through the Capitals defence. The Edinburgh Capitals were putting up a determined effort in the Murrayfield Ice Rink and with 55 seconds of the period remaining, Peter Holecko tied game yet again, scoring on the powerplay after Calvin Elfring had been awarded a two minute penalty for hooking.

The third period began with both sides having it all to play for and it was the Capitals who got themselves into the lead again thanks to their third powerplay goal of the night – this time from Richard Hartmann at 49:29. The Belfast Giants tried desperately to find back into the game though they simply couldn’t get past Edinburgh netminder├é┬áTomas Hiadlovsky and at 56:08 the decisive blow was struck. With the visitors throwing everything at the Edinburgh net, it was Edinburgh’s player/coach who would score the insurance goal and his team’s fifth of the night to ensure the win for the Capitals
