Dynamos to support Medway Foodbank in 19/20
The Invicta Dynamos are delighted to announce that Medway Foodbank will be the club’s official charity partner for the 2019/20 campaign allowing us, with your fantastic backing, to support individuals and families in crisis in our local community.
Over the course of the season the club will be collecting food at home games, donations via raffles and promoting the organisation in a bid to help support the charity who are part of the Trussell Trust’s UK wide network.
Speaking on the new arrangement, club co-owner Sarah Parrish said, “We are very excited to be joining forces with Medway Foodbank for 2019/20. Not only is it a very worthy cause but it also allows us to be a force for good in our own community. As a group we feel this gives us the opportunity to make a real difference to some of those who need it most and we are looking forward to doing our bit”.
Invicta Dynamos Media Officer Paul Bennett added, “It’s the incredible generosity of our supporters that inspired this arrangement. In the past they have dug deep for charity collections or thrown hundreds of soft toys to the ice to support a local hospice. This year we’re hoping they will really get behind this cause and help people who are potentially in their own neighbourhood.
“The sad truth is that the demand on foodbanks rises year on year. For many individuals and families finances are already stretched and, whilst they would usually get by, a sudden loss of employment, a bout of illness or a serious accident can see them unexpectedly unable to meet their bills. Foodbank donations help these people keep food on the table and provide them the support they need to restore normality. In reality these unfortunate circumstances could befall any of us and we would each be grateful for the helping hand so this partnership is a great opportunity for us as a group to be a part of that hand helping others get back to their feet.
“The beauty of this arrangement is that supporting the foodbank can cost as little or as much as you want. Whether you drop a single 30p tin of carrots into our collection bin at home games or a bag of items – it will all make a difference to someone in crisis. You could be the difference maker in someone’s life and all for the price of a packet of instant mash! We’re really excited to show the heart and generosity of the Invicta Dynamos of which the supporters are a major part.”
WHO ARE MEDWAY FOODBANK?
Everyday people in the UK go hungry for reasons ranging from redundancy to receiving an unexpected bill on a low income. A simple box of food can make all the difference in supporting these individuals and families when they most need help and this is where Medway Foodbank step in.
Schools, churches, businesses, clubs and individuals generously donate non-perishable, in-date food to a foodbank. Large collections often take place as part of Harvest Festival celebrations whilst food is also collected from supermarkets. Volunteers at Medway Foodbank then sort food to check it is in date and pack it into boxes ready to be given to people in need. Over 40,000 people nationwide give up their time to volunteer at foodbanks.
Foodbanks partner with a wide variety of care professionals such as doctors, health visitors, social workers and police to identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. Foodbank clients bring their voucher to a foodbank centre where it can be redeemed for three days worth of emergency food.
A typical food parcel includes breakfast cereal, soup, pasta, rice, sauces, baked beans, tinned meat, tinned vegetables, instant mash, UHT milk, tea, coffee, sugar, tinned dessert and biscuits. In addition to distributing food, volunteers meet clients over a warm drink or free hot meal and are able to signpost people to agencies able to solve the longer term problem.
Medway Foodbank was established in 2011 and the demand on their services increases year on year with one in five of the UK population now living below the poverty line. 5,835 three day emergency food supplies were issued by the organisation to people in crisis in 2018-19.
WHY ARE WE SUPPORTING MEDWAY FOODBANK?
The Invicta Dynamos and you, our incredible supporters, already have a fantastic reputation for supporting local causes and in 2019/20 the club is looking to continue that trend.
By teaming up with Medway Foodbank the Dynamos, with your support, are able to make a meaningful difference to our local community and help offer emergency food to people in crisis across Chatham, Gillingham, Rainham, Rochester and Strood.
The club are inviting supporters to make donations at home games throughout the 2019/20 campaign that will then be passed on to Medway Foodbank for distribution to those who need it most.
We know that some of our fans may also be feeling the financial pinch but you are invited to donate as much or as little as you can. Every 50p bag of sugar, £1 pack of dried pasta or £1.50 bottle of squash will support people near you. And if enough of us donate – it soon adds up!
HOW ARE WE SUPPORTING MEDWAY FOODBANK?
As our charity partner for the 2019/20 season, the Invicta Dynamos are committed to both collecting donations and driving awareness for Medway Foodbank. We will be doing this by:
• Collecting supporter food donations at home games throughout the campaign. All donations, no matter how big or small, will be passed on to Medway Foodbank and distributed to local individuals or families in need.
• Promoting Medway Foodbank. The Medway Foodbank logo will be present on our game jerseys, website and social media throughout the season helping raise awareness of the organisation. Each month the foodbank releases a ‘shopping list’ of items they need most and we will be sharing these to help them continue providing their much-needed services.
• Holding occasional raffles / events to raise funds for Medway Foodbank.
