Dustin Whitecotton Gears Up For Cardiff Battles

This Saturday and Sunday the Stena Line Belfast Giants host the Cardiff Devils in what will be two important battles on the Odyssey Arena ice. Saturday’s face-off is 7pm with the puck drop at 4pm on Sunday and both teams will be ready for an exhausting weekend and hoping for four vital Elite League points come Sunday night.

Forward Dustin Whitecotton has been gearing up for this weekends’ clashes with the Devils for slightly longer than usual, with the Giants having last played on Saturday in Braehead, giving the team plenty of practice this week.

“It’s been a long week of practice as we haven’t played since last Saturday,” said Whitecotton. “So we’ve had plenty of time to try out new tactics and get everything sorted with our powerplay and penalty-kill for Cardiff this weekend.”

Dustin Whitecotton, new to the Belfast organisation, has impressed in his first season, currently sitting third in the Giants points standings, averaging a point-per-game with three goals and 11 assists, good for 14 points in 14 games played. The Giants have taken full points in the three games already played against the Cardiff Devils this season, however Whitecotton expects this weekends’ games to be physical encounters,

“Always, the first three games in Cardiff certainly have been (physical). They’re definitely a team that likes to play the body and on their small ice surface as soon as you turn around with the puck there’s someone coming to hit you right away and everything seems to happen in a split second.”

This weekend will provide at different challenge for both teams, coming up against the same opposition two days in-a-row,

“I don’t think I’ve done that since college. On one hand it’s good as if things go well on Saturday then you don’t have to change tactics but as far as Sunday and regeneration goes, it’s important to get as much food and sleep into you as you can.”

Tickets are still available for Saturday’s and Sunday’s games this weekend as the Giants take on the Devils. Click here to book your tickets online or visit the Odyssey Arena Box Office in person or call (028) 9073 9074.
