Dragons Put Through Their Paces
Prospective Dragons players were put through their paces last night when GB Assistant Coach Tom Watkins took to the ice at Deeside Ice Rink.
Watkins, who won the EPL title and British Challenge Cup with The Tigers last season, was on hand at the club’s second set of trials under new owners Red Hockey.
Alongside Dragons Head Coach Lol Paul, Watkins ran drills to test the hopefuls’ fitness, skill and overall ability ahead of the new Laidler Conference campaign. He said: “The guys here are really passionate about ice hockey and that showed during the drills we ran. They all wanted to make a good impression. For me, that is very important.“Fundamental skills are the crucial and the guys on the ice understood that very quickly.  They worked hard throughout the session.“Lol is in charge of the team he wants for next season and I believe The Dragons can make a big impact on their league.
It is going to be extremely exciting for them.
â€Paul will now begin to flesh out a squad that already includes former Widnes star Matt Wainwright and Dragons club captain, Marc Lovell. He is currently discussing terms with a number of players who appeared at Wednesday night’s trials – including an as-yet unnamed import
.“I was very impressed by the players’ passion to pull on a Dragons jersey next season,†he said.“Having Tom here gave them a taste of what is required to success, both at this level and even higher up the ice hockey pyramid.“We are in talks with an import who will really raise the bar for us. He is keen to be part of The Dragons and Red Hockey, and fans will be delighted with his signing.â€
