Devils break winless run at Skydome
Cardiff Devils broke their winless run at the Skydome Arena, narrowly defeating the Genting Casino Coventry Blaze 1-2 on Sunday night.
Great Britain’s number one netminder Ben Bowns began the game in impressive fashion, not least denying Charles Corcoran on a break-away. Stopping 33 shots on the night, Bowns was named Cardiff’s man-of-the-match, presented by Coventry City legend Steve Ogrizovic who was in attendance.
The opening goal came for the Devils at 29.06 as a Sean McMonagle shot was re-directed into the net by Stephen Dixon.
Blaze were level on 33.31 as a smart backhand pass from Johnny Curran was hit home by Andrew Johnston.
With both sides going back and forth, the winner came at 53.51 as Finn Matias Sointu managed to beat Jamie Phillips in the Coventry goal from close-in.
Try as they might, and with the Phillips pulled for the extra skater, Blaze piled on the pressure in the final minute, but Bowns wasn’t to be beaten again and the buzzer sounded on a 1-2 Devils victory.
Head Coach Danny Stewart said, “The performance was really good. I thought we did a lot of good things. It’s another night where that extra play or bounce makes a difference and unfortunately, we were on the wrong side of it tonight.”
