Department Of Player Issue Suspensions

The Elite League Department of Player Safety have reviewed incidents following last weekends games – vs Guildford in Belfast on Friday and away vs Sheffield on Sunday.

Regarding Spiro Goulakos – there was a 2 + 10 Checking from Behind penalty and a requested review for a possible Checking from Behind incident. The Department of Player Safety have upgraded both to a 5 + Game for ‘checking from behind’.

@eihldops 1 game suspension for this hit, an absolute joke! Blindside hit✔️, targeted the head✔️ defenseless player✔️ You should be ashamed

Also at 07.49 in the 3rd Period Goulakos was assessed a match penalty, by the Department of Player Safety, for Kicking, so Spiro Goulakos is banned for a total of three games, by the Department of Player Safety.

Player safety, when done incorrectly, has big implications. It’s a governance issue that cannot have a conflict of interest!

Regarding Sheffield ‘s Colton Fretter – the Department of Player Safety have reviewed the 5 + Game Checking from Behind penalty called on the Steelers player which has been amended to a match penalty for charging by the Department of Player Safety.

@BelfastGiants I hope there's changes to be made to the leadership of @eihldops that is a joke 1 game !!! A punch to the back of the head wow #figureitout

A match penalty is an automatic one game ban (which cannot be appealed) no further games have been added by the Department of Player Safety so Colton Fretter is banned for a total of one game.

@eihldops it’s a shame you are putting players safety in the hands of the players..you’ve set the standard

Friday 20th October – Giants vs Guildford Flames

The Department of Player Safety have reviewed two incidents involving Guildford Flames players Brett Ferguson and Jesse Craige followed requests by Belfast Giants.

The Department of Player Safety have reviewed the boarding penalty called on Brett Ferguson at 14.49 in the first period which has been amended to a match penalty for Checking from Behind.

A match penalty is an automatic one game ban (which cannot be appealed) no further games have been added by DOPS so Brett Ferguson is banned for a total of one game.

Also an incident involving Jesse Craige where no penalty was called on the play and after reviewing the video, the Department of Player Safety has assessed a 5 + Game penalty for slashing, which will be added to his playing record.

Lost in all the outrage over the Fretter/ Goulakos decision is this. 0 games for attempting to slash a player in the head ? #ChangeIsNeeded https://t.co/LEDpnjOeDA
