Darcy Murphy Returns To Belfast For 2018/19 Season

The Stena Line Belfast Giants are pleased to announce the return of Darcy Murphy for the 2018/19 Elite League season. The 25 year old forward from Ontario, Canada makes it two seasons in-a-row with the Giants after a successful 2017/18 season in teal, helping the organisation to a ninth major trophy with the Challenge Cup victory.

Although Murphy was new to the Giants and the Elite League in 2017/18, it was not his first appearance in Belfast having played for Colgate University in the inaugural Friendship Four tournament in 2015.

Murphy posted three game winning goals and collected seven man of the match awards – joint first on the team.

Prior to joining Belfast – Murphy spent four years in the NCAA with Colgate University, icing 146 times and posting 48 goals and 42 assists, good for 90 points. In his senior year, Murphy was awarded the position as Assistant Captain after winning the Rob Ries Award for his inspiration and leadership on the team.

He then joined the ECHL’s Elmira Jackals straight from university, posting two goals and an assists in eight games. During Murphy’s first full professional season in 2016/17, he posted 19 goals and 15 assists, good for 34 points in 63 games played.

Head Coach Adam Keefe on Darcy Murphy returning to the Giants:

“I am excited to add Darcy to our 2018/19 lineup. He brings energy and a strong compete level to the team. With 33 goals, he made a great impression throughout the season and in the big games including the Challenge Cup final in Cardiff.

“I know our fans love Darcy and I believe he will continue to put up even bigger numbers in his second year here in Belfast.”

Darcy Murphy on his return to Belfast:

“Belfast is a team and a city I fell in love with last season and returning was an easy decision. The fans here are unbelievable and being able to bring a trophy back to Belfast was a special moment – something I want to do again.”

“Being able to continue my studies with Ulster University is another major factor in my return and I am excited to get the 2018/19 season started.”

*Thanks to Davy McGimpsey from AVFTB for the statistics on Darcy Murphy’s career in Belfast to date.

I’ll be coming back to @BelfastGiants next season because I love this city and it has the best fans!! Maybe even do a @team_mcclean run with my best buddy Ethan next year ????
