Clan Net Goalie Starrett
The Glasgow Clan are delighted to announce the signing of netminder Shane Starrett. The six-foot-five Canadian is the first signing of the new coach, Malcolm Cameron and the first confirmed name on the roster for the new 2021/22 season, which is scheduled to go ahead in November.
Starrett spoke of his delight at reuniting with his former coach, with whom he worked at ECHL side Wichita Thunder and described his biggest assets as a goalie. “It’s very exciting to be coming over and I’d been looking at opportunities overseas so when Malcolm Cameron called me, I found what he told me intriguing,” he said. “I’d never been to Scotland or the UK and speaking to various people, they spoke very highly of Glasgow as a city in general. “The coach and I had a lot of success in Wichita, reaching the play-offs and we had a good relationship there. “He’ll tell you how it is. He’s a great coach and doesn’t sugar coat things. He wants to best from the team and make sure everything is done correctly and I’m sure he’ll bring success to the team. “I’m a tall goalie and my athleticism is one area I pride myself on. My ability to be able to move quickly, because of my size and reach across the net is something that’s a big aspect of me. “I’m looking forward to winning some games. It looks like it’s going to be a lot of fun and hopefully it will be a successful one too.”
Starrett has worked with head coach Cameron before, where they worked together at ECHL side Wichita Thunder in the 2017/18 season. Since leaving the Air Force Academy in 2017, where he played in the NCAA, Starrett has also featured in the AHL with Bakersfield Condors and last season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. He also played 23 times in the ECHL with Wheeling Nailers last season and will head to Scotland to play for a coach who had him at the top of his wish list. “Shane was right at the top and quite honestly, I was surprised he agreed to come over. Goalies tend to wait until they’re older before they make a move like that,” Cameron said. “Shane’s huge and because of his size, he fills the goal so there’s not a lot to shoot at when he’s there. “For me, being able to sign someone I was comfortable with, someone I’ve had success with made it easy for me.” “He’s a smart guy, someone who likes new experiences plus we have a really good relationship and I definitely think it’s a good fit for us both.”
