Cardiff Devils Preview

With the EIHL hockey season to start in late September one of the clubs to watch out for is the Cardiff devils. Before the suspension of games the devils were in first place, which is where they finished upon the season being suspended. The suspension was due to COVID 19.

The league was on hiatus last season and didn’t play a single game due to the pandemic.  Players often found new places to play or some just sat it out.  With a new season upon us the devils want to finish what they started and are primed for another spectacular season.

The most important players at each position are as follows: goaltender Mac Carruth, Defenseman Matt Register and forward Brodie Reid. Careuth is important to the devils due to the fact that he will be relied on if goaltender
Taran Kozun falters in net.

Carruth  played last season with Lausitzer Füchse of DEL2. He finished with a record of 13-24-0, a goals-against-average of 3.10 and a save % of .911. He is a steady goaltender who has proven in the past he can stand on his head in net and supply his team with timely saves.  He could actually compete with  Kozun for the starter job.

Register is a proven winner, winning 3 Kelly Cup championships in the ECHL, along with defenseman of the year. He specializes in the offensive Zone and on the power play. He has a bullet pass for the forwards entering the offensive zone and a laser for a slap shot. His all-around game could be better but his offensive game is something to keep your eyes on. Last season, Register split time between the AHL Iowa Wild and theAllen Americans of the ECHL. During that time he recorded  5 goals, 47 assists for 52 points in a combined 68 games.

Brodie Reid is an offensive wizard. He finds the open man, creates offense out of nowhere and is a threat every time he steps on the ice.  Playing all over the world he has a wealth of experience and uses that to his advantage. A point producer who can also play a 200 foot game he excels when the game is on the line. Reid is 32 years old but his game is reminiscent of a rookie due to the face he never stops moving and skates like the wind. Last season he played for the ECHL Kansas City Mavericks and produced only like he can. 25 goals and 35 assists for 60 points in 60 games.

The captains will play a big part this year to keep the players the same page. The captain will be defenseman Mark Richardson. Wearing the A’s this season for Cardiff will be defenseman Brendan Mikkelson and forwards Stephen Dixon and Samuel Duggan. The team is well represented with these four players and should be expected to compete every night.

The season is fast approaching. The devils are ready to go and are well stocked at every position. However this is a new season. With every season teams get better and players move on, with this season being no different. It will be a grind. It will be difficult. But Cardiff will play Devils hockey.

The Devils are looking to pick up where they left off. With the roster they have and Jarrod Skalde behind the bench there is no reason they Devils shouldn’t be considered serious contenders for champions of the EIHL.
