Calvin Elfring Looks Ahead To New Giants Campaign

Stena Line Belfast Giants defenceman Calvin Elfring hit the ground running when he arrived in Belfast from DEL side Straubing Tigers, posting 13 goals and 35 assists in 59 games played in the 2013/14 season. Elfring was widely recognised for his success after helping the Giants to the Elite League title with ten games still to play and was named in the Elite League and Ice-Hockey Journalists of the UK All-Star teams as well as collecting the Defenceman of the Year Award from the Elite League and from the Belfast Giants Season Ticket Holders at the End of Season Awards Night.

Though despite the on-ice success last season, Elfring still points to the two Final defeats as a blow when the Giants fell to the Panthers in the Challenge Cup final on penalty shots and then days later to Sheffield in the Playoff Grand Final in overtime,

“It (last season) exceeded my expectations personally and as a team but it was pretty disappointing the way we finished the year losing the Challenge Cup and Playoffs. Though that will give us fuel for next season and it gets us motivated and everyone will come back and want to have more success next season. It’s good to refuel and get ready again and expend extra game with the family.”

Elfring will play under Steve Thornton when the ‘new’ Head Coach returns for his third spell in Belfast and the experienced defenceman is already looking forward to next season and is excited at the prospect at lacing up his skates for the new coach,

“He seems like a good guy with a good hockey mind. He’s already spoken to me about systems that he wants to bring in. He’s happy for the opportunity to come back to Belfast and that’s good to have.”

Not many know that Elfring only planned to spend one season in Belfast and then retire from the sport, however he is more than happy to have signed another one year deal with the organisation after announcing his return at the Season Ticket Holders event in W5 last month,

“I love the city. I came here with the intentions of retiring after last season but after talking to my wife and children and they pushed me to play one more year – i’m really happy to come back and it was a pretty easy decision to make.”
