Braehead Clan’s hopes of solidifying their place in the PredictorBet Play-offs will go down to the wire after suffering a 6-3 loss to Nottingham Panthers.
With only one game to go, Clan still hold on to eighth place, but need to win at Guildford Flames on Saturday to keep the dream alive.
The home side got the perfect start when Craig Peacock found Adam Brace with a pass from behind the goal, with the Clan forward jamming home from close range.
They added a second a few minutes later when Braehead found themselves in a two-on-one situation, with Ryan Potulny squaring for Ville Hämäläinen, who slammed his shot into the net.
Panthers got themselves on the board with a powerplay goal when Luke Pither teed up Zack Phillips and he dispatched his effort into the top left hand corner to halve the deficit.
Corey Neilson’s side drew level early in the second when Alexander Mokshantsev made the entry into the Clan zone and struck a low shot that got the better of home goalie Ryan Nie.
Then Nottingham took the lead at the midway point with Mokshantsev added his second as he poked in from close range.
Evan Mosey was on hand to make it 4-2 a couple of minutes later when his effort snuck in as the mood turned in the arena.
Clan hit back through Robbie Lepine in the third as he scored from close range as the home side looked to bridge the gap to give them hope.
But Nottingham struck again when Tim Billingsley was blocked off by Christoffer Bjorklund, leaving Pither to backhand his shot into the net.
They finished the job with a shot from Raphael Bussieres from the inside right as the loss was confirmed.
