Blueliner Games of the Day: Saturday 23rd February
It was a dramatic night at the NIC last night which say the Nottingham Panthers take big step towards ending the curse and lifting a first EIHL title. Tonight, however, the two teams chasing down the Panthers for that title are in action against each other as the Belfast Giants take on the Sheffield Steelers. Both sides desperately need the two points to close the gap but neither side will want to give the other a point either.
Elsewhere tonight the Hull Stingrays and Fife Flyers will meet in Gardiner Conference action. A win for the Flyers will take them level on points with the Braehead Clan in the Conference whilst a Hull win will move them with a point of the conference summit and mean all 5 teams will be separated by 2 points. Both sides will also need a win to keep their playoff pushes alive. With the bottom 5 teams 6 points apart every point is vital to avoid an early trip to the golf course.
English Premier League
The Peterborough Phantoms are in action against the Bracknell Bees knowing a point will secure their playoff appearence and condem the Sheffield Steeldogs no matter what their result is against Basingstoke. The game of the night though is at the Thunderdome in Milton Keynes. The Lightning have the task of stopping inform and table topping Guildford. The Flames were on unstoppable form in midweek against Manchester and have a 4 point lead at the top of the table. The Lightning meanwhile are hunting down third spot fast and picked up a midweek win of their own against Swindon.
There are no National League 2 games tonight which means all the action is on the first division. The most important game of the night at the Ryde Arena where the Wightlink Raiders host the table topping Romford Raiders. Romford hold the one point lead at the top over the Wightlink Raiders and with third placed Chelmsford two points back and not in action both teams will be looking to get one over their rival and apply some pressure.
Elsewhere it is third against fourth in National League North 1 as the Sutton Sting are in Blackburn. It is a game that both will want to win to try to avoid a likely trip to Solway in the playoffs but with the Sting six points clear of the Hawks a win for the visitors tonight could go a long way to decide the playoff seedings.
