Blaze snap-up centreman Thompson

Coventry Blaze have announced the signing of 27-year-old centreman Mathew Thompson.

Thompson, 6’1″ with a right-shot, joins the Blaze from the Indy Fuel in the ECHL where he was Captain.

In 115 regular season and playoff games with the Fuel, Thompson collected 81 points (33 goals, 48 assists) and iced five times with the AHL’s Rockford IceHogs.

In 2018/19, after finishing third on the team for scoring (50 points) and assists (29), Thompson was named Indy’s Rookie of the Year.

Thompson also held a captaincy with Adrian College (NCAA IIII) where he spent four seasons with 128 points (61 goals, 67 assists).

In 2018, Thompson won the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Player of the Year award and in 2015/16 and 2017/18 he was voted to the All-Conference Team.

Thompson helped Adrian to four NCHA regular-season titles, two Harris Cup post-season crowns and four NCAA Division III tournament appearances.

Head Coach Danny Stewart said, “We are getting Mathew at a great age. He has had a lot of success early on in his career, and gives us a top six centre. He’s a right-handed guy which we have missed, and his hockey IQ is very good. He can play all situations on both sides of the puck and will eat a lot of minutes for us next season. He can create through many different ways and we like his overall game. Being named Captain in your second season of pro says a lot about his character, and that goes a long way in joining a new team with a big core.”
