Bird Flies In!!

The Dragons have moved quickly to secure the services of netminder Graeme Bird. Sunday night saw Bird play a major part in The Dragons win over the Solihull Barons. Bird stopped 35 shots in the 4-3 win that saw The Dragons pick up their first points of the season. Coach Mckenzie was impressed by Bird’s performance; “To be honest I wasn’t expecting Graeme to play as well as he did. He had a really solid game and impressed throughout. The most important thing for me was that I could see the confidence in my team grow as the game went on. I put this down to the way Graeme played.” The move to bring Bird in came as a shock to most fans and players around the league, Mckenzie explains the reason for bringing Bird in to the Dragons organisation; “I have known Graeme for a long time having played together many years ago and I really wanted some support for Jonah (Armstrong). He is a young guy that we hung out to dry last weekend. Jonah is more than capable to play at this level but he needs some help along the way. He is just 17 and the experience of training and playing at this level will only benefit not only Jonah but The Dragons in years to come. Graeme works for the Ambulance Service too so won’t be able to commit to every single game and training session. So it is important that we have a good tandem but not isolate young Jonah. It is the perfect situation for us as a club right now.”

We spoke to Graeme earlier this week and this is what he had to say about returning to Deeside

“It’s great that the opportunity to return to Deeside has come about, obviously it’s a place that means a lot to me after playing my junior hockey here. Being back on the ice with some of the lads I grew up playing hockey with is great. It’s a good group of lads who are here because they want to be.It will be interesting to see how the season goes with the mixture of ex-EPL teams and NIHL teams. If we buy in to Scott’s game plan and stick together, working hard for a full 60 minutes then I think we have a good chance in games. We showed we can play with Solihull, and if we continue like that we’ll pick up points.”
