Belfast Giants In Eleven Heaven After Win In Wales

The Stena Line Belfast Giants dominated Sunday’s Elite League clash against the Cardiff Devils to post an 11-4 victory. Goals from Kevin Saurette (4), Jeffrey Szwez (3), Mark Garside, Craig Peacock, Chris Higgins and Adam Keefe ensured the Giants collected the two points in a comprehensive win. The Giants shared netminding duties tonight with Andrew Dickson replacing Stephen Murphy at the beginning of the third period with the score 10-2. Kevin Saurette collected the Man of the Match award after posting four goals and one assist, good for 5 points on the night and a total of 49 points so far this season in 36 games played.

Giants had the early jump and led 2-0 inside the opening five minutes thanks to goals by Saurette (PP) at 1.14 and Szwez at 4.29. Brad Plumpton got Devils on the board at 6.08 but Saurette (PP) had the visitors 3-1 ahead before also on the PP Ben Davies reduced the leeway at 18.51.

The second session saw Giants simply run away with it as the deluge began with a strike by Saurette at 24.49 to complete his treble. Further strikes by Szwez at 27.02, Mark Garside at 28.18 and Szwez with his hat trick at 28.44 saw off Phil Cook in the Devils goal and had Giants 7-2 ahead. Back up goaltender Joe Myers fared little better and before the period end Giants added three more goals from Craig Peacock 29.37, Adam Keefe shorthanded on a delayed penalty at 31.45 and Saurette again at 33.52.

Cook was back between the Devils pipes at the start of the third period but was again picking the puck out of the net at 42.16 as Chris Higgins fired in Giants’ eleventh of the night and having changed starter Stephen Murphy with Andrew Dickson Giants took their feet off the gas, with Devils scoring twice late on through the efforts of Tomas Kurka at 52.53 and Max Birbraer at 53.35 but even that late salvo could do nothing to make the final score look anything but disastrous for the Welsh side.
