Basingstoke Bison 3 – 1 Bracknell Bees

The Bracknell Bees headed to Basingstoke to face the Bison looking to end their long drought at their rink.  Both teams came out hard and fast as the game swung from end to end but it was the Bison who found the net twice in under a minute half way through the period.

Their first goal came from Tim Burrows who pounced on a loose puck and fired past Mettam with just under 10 minutes gone in the game.   Less than a minute later Cameron Wynn put the Bison two goals up when Joe Rand put him through and his wrist shot managed to find a way past Mettam.

The sides traded penalties and Matt Foord received a 10 minute misconduct for querying a board penalty assessed to him.   The sides saw off the result powerplays but a break from Tomas Karpov and a long range shot trickled through Mettams pads giving the Bison a 3-0 lead.

Coach Cox called a timeout at this point to re-gather the teams thoughts and also elected to change netminders – with Tom Annetts seeing his first action of the season.   The period saw more Bison pressure but Annetts stood firm.

The second period was a more even affair with early Bison chances being well save by Annetts.  A Lukas Smital breakaway resulted in his shot being deflected over and from the resulting faceoff Ollie Bronniman got off a powerful shot which felled Dean Skinns in the Bison net who needed treatment to his shoulder, he did however remain in the game.   The action swung from end to end with good saves being forced from both netminders.   The Bees looked threatening but couldn’t find the final pass or telling shot.

Heading into the third period still three goals down the Bees stepped up the pressure but the action became stretched with the Bees pushing forward.   Their efforts were rewarded when Ollie Bronniman let a wrist shot go from the right faceoff circle, up and over Skinns shoulder for a Bees goal.   This spurred the Bees on who raised the tempo but despite several good opportunities couldn’t find a way past Skinns.   When the Bison did make the most of the space that the Bees were leaving as they pushed forward Annetts stood firm to anything the Bison could throw at him.

Late on Annetts was removed for the extra skater and the Bison came close on the empty net on at least two occasions, hitting the post once.   A penalty on Kamil Tvrdek meant that Annetts came back on and the Bison saw out the final seconds to clinch the win.

The Man of the Match awards duly went to Tim Burrows for the Bison and Lukas Smital for the Bees.
